The Gentle Giants

Elephant's World was founded in 2008, as a sanctuary for sick, old, disabled, abused, illegal and street elephants, who will receive the rest and joy that they deserve.

They can enjoy themselves in their own natural environment here until their last breath.

Our main goal is to help and work for the (Gentle Giants) Elephants and NOT them working of us.

In 1900 there were approximately 100,000 elephants. Today about 2000 elephants live in the wild and about 3000 in captivity.  The main reason for the drop in number is reduction of living space and recently, as a result of illegal logging. A smaller living area means less food for elephants. Wild elephants are still taken from the forest for trading, tusks, or breeding.  Most elephants in captivity work so hard that they do not become in heat. There are less male elephants then females, which often results in inbreeding. If nothing happens, inbreeding in existing smaller elephant populations will lead to a further weakening of the species.  Dr. Samart (head of the Department of Livestock of Kanchanaburi province) plans an artificial insemination project for domesticated elephants. The purpose of this project is to protect the wild bulls in the forest.  He hopes to prevent their capture for breeding and counteract severe inbreeding observed in domesticated elephant populations in Thailand.

Did you know.

A female elephant is called a cow, it’s the same as cattle – males are bulls, females are cows and babies are calves.
