50 years ago the Thai Government prohibited logging. This resulted in unemployment for mahouts and elephants involved with transporting timber. Many mahouts and their elephants headed for cities to beg. Wandering with an elephant far removed from its natural habitat leads to bad diet and sleeping under bridges. Walking on sun-baked asphalt is painful for elephant’s feet. Traffic is hazardous and stressful.
As a solution, Elephant’s World came into being. It provides sanctuary for old sick, disabled and abused street elephants. Founded in 2008 by vet. Dr. Samart Prasitthiphon with the aim “We work for elephants not elephants for us”. We promise our elephants “Stay for life, never work again”.
At Elephant’s World we welcome volunteers and visitors. See our projects in photos and video on this website. You’re welcome to be part of the Elephant’s World team in daily activities such as bathing elephants in the river, planting and gathering food, feeding ... or just spending time being close to these huge, gentle, majestic creatures in natural surroundings, the way nature intended.
